Why Do I Want a Podcast?

Just to make sure you know "What is a Podcast and Why you might want a podcast… this is my personal definition and recommendations.  If you find anything to add about why you might want a podcast or what a podcast is…please leave a comment.

Many technical definitions are available on the internet to explain what is a podcast.  It actually is a very easy concept.  It’s like TiVo for MP3 players.  Your favorite radio talk show is available to you anytime on the internet.  With management software, you will be able to schedule every show to be downloaded. When you are ready to sync with your player, all the files are automatically placed in a new play list and loaded.  Think of podcasts as subscriptions for your mp3 player.

Baby Boomer Listening to PodcastPodcasts are not just for the popular radio talk show.  The great thing about the internet is that it is open to anyone.  Everyday, more self-published “radio shows” are becoming available. Amazingly, podcasts are not yet a popularity contest.  Even the very bad show hosts have all the time and space they want to rant about any subject, and also use un-censored language to boot.

If you search the internet for podcasts, you will find a seemingly unlimited supply to choose from.  However, finding good podcast choices has become much easier in the last year. 

Some of the most popular shows are listed with podcast directories.  These directories use what is called an RSS feed. Once you subscribe to a podcast the directories will automatically check for updates and download new episodes to your computer.  All you need to do is sync with your mp3 player and your ready to go.

Podcasting is not just for radio show subscriptions.  You will find Podcasts listed on websites of religious groups, television shows, politicians or news organizations. Large companies are using them as alerts and to pass on meeting audio notes.

 
One side comment about the " i" factor.  It is amazing how many new produces have an "i" in front of the name.  It must be a great marketing tool, but an i doesn’t always mean it only works with an iPod.  Don’t pass up some of the best mp3 player accessories, just because you don’t have an iPod.  Most manufactures are smart enough to design products to work with players other than the i players.
